The new (fall 2020) MUSD MacBook laptops have a new login window that requires users to sign in with their network credentials in order to log in to the laptop. This authentication is done over the Internet, so the MacBook needs to be connected to a working Wi-Fi network at bootup. MUSD pushes out the necessary Wi-Fi networks to use when on campus, but users may need to connect off site as well. This new login window has options available to connect to other networks if needed or to sign in locally when a Wi-Fi network is not available. This tutorial will show you these options.
For the initial login to a new MacBook, you must be connected to a working Internet connection via Wi-Fi. This will then create a local account that can be used when a Wi-Fi network is not available.
Connect to a new Wi-Fi network
The new login screen looks like this:
Your username is the first part of your email address (typically your first initial followed by your last name). So John Doe would use jdoe as his username.
Your password is your network password. If you don't remember that or haven't set it, see this tutorial for help: Change or reset your Network password using the web based password change system
In the image above, everything is working correctly and the MacBook is connected to a working Wi-Fi network. If the MacBook is not connected, the login window may look like this:
If this is what you see, and you know you have a working Wi-Fi network nearby that you can connect to, then click on the Wi-Fi icon on the top left corner of the window (circled here).
From the drop down window that shows up, select your Wi-Fi network (the list will be different from the picture below and shows networks in range of the MacBook) and enter the password (if prompted).
Once connected, click the "Try again" button and you should get the normal login window asking for username and password.
Sign in locally (no Wi-Fi available)
This only works if you have previously signed in to your new MacBook laptop while connected to a working Wi-Fi network (this creates a local account).
If you are in a location that does not have Wi-Fi available, you can sign in with your local user account. When you get the login window error screen,
click on the "Sign in with Local User" link on the top right corner of the window. This will bring up the local user login window.
Sign in with your username and password and your MacBook will sign in.
